SAFE SPACE POLICY

Silt Studio’s safe space policy is intended to help the studio be a supportive, non-threatening environment for all who participate. We encourage everyone – artists, instructors, students, visitors, and volunteers – to be proactive in creating an atmosphere where the safety of others is validated. In this spirit, violence, abuse, sexual harassment, and discrimination will not be tolerated.

Everyone entering Silt Studio is asked to be aware of their language and behaviour, and to think about how it might impact others. All participants are expected to promote and support considerate, inclusive language and actions.

By entering Silt Studio, and/or participating in Silt Studio courses, workshops, events, and/or studio access, you agree to abide by the following guidelines:

  • Respect people’s opinions, beliefs, experiences and differing points of view.

  • Respect everyone’s identity and background, including pronouns and names. Do not assume anyone’s gender identity, sexual preference, economic status, background, health, etc.

  • Respect everyone’s physical and emotional boundaries. Check in before discussing topics that may be difficult for others (e.g. abuse, physical violence, or encounters with police). Physical and/or verbal threats will not be tolerated at Silt Studio under any circumstances. Disruptive individuals may be asked to leave the space.

  • Be aware that your actions and words have an effect on others, despite what your intentions may be. Listen and change your behaviour and/or language if someone tells you that you are making them uncomfortable.

  • Be aware of your prejudices and privileges and the space you take up at Silt Studio.

  • Obtain explicit verbal consent before touching or engaging in discussions of an intimate nature.

  • Do not photograph, film, or video people or their artwork without their permission.

  • Irresponsible or excessive use of drugs and alcohol in the studio is not permitted.

The staff and artists at Silt Studio are empowered to enforce these rules. If you cannot abide by the guidelines mentioned above, Silt Studio reserves the right to ask you to leave.

If you witness or experience discrimination, harassment, or abuse, please approach a Silt Studio staff member whom you feel comfortable talking to in person or via email. We are here to help with any conflicts arising from the violation of our policies.

We welcome continuing discussion about and improvement of this policy. We thank you for contributing to a space that fosters creativity, respect, and positive evolution in our communities.

SILT STUDIO GUIDELINES

Community

Silt Studio is a communal space. Everyone is expected to respect the work needs, privacy, and concentration of others. It is essential that you cooperate with Silt Studio staff, artists, and students to uphold a positive, productive, fun, and professional communal atmosphere. All participants should be inclusive of each other with the understanding that providing a rich, diverse creative experience to one another and to the wider community is an important aspect of Silt Studio.

If you recognize that you are using a lot of consumables from the communal areas (ie. tea, coffee, snacks, etc), please contribute to the donations jar in the kitchen.

If you use the fridge, please label and date your food and dispose of perishables in a timely manner. Please contribute to the integrity of communal spaces - be responsible for your items and clean up after yourself at all times. Help us keep things tidy and pleasant for everyone!

We ask that you respect all posted schedules for the classroom, workshop, and shared spaces. We’ll do our best to ensure that everyone has adequate time and space to make!
